Putin Orders Russian Move To GNU/Linux

Putin Orders Russian Move To GNU/Linux: "Glyn Moody writes 'Vladimir Putin has signed an order calling for Russian federal authorities to move to GNU/Linux, and for the creation of 'a single repository of free software used in the federal bodies of executive power.' There have been a number of Russian projects to roll out free software, notably in the educational sector, but none so far has really taken off. With the backing of Putin, could this be the breakthrough free software has been waiting for?'

IBM's 5 on 5: Holograms Will Come to Life Just Like in Star Wars

IBM's 5 on 5: Holograms Will Come to Life Just Like in Star Wars: "

Two Holograms: Rimmer and Leia The annual Five on Five gives IBM's predictions for the next five years. The predictions this year are thought provoking but one really caught our attention.

The hologram. As in the 'Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope,' kind of hologram.

IBM Labs says the hologram will be a part of our lives in the next five years. You will be able to beam 3D images to people who can then talk with you as they walk down the street. It will be as if you are walking with them. 3D cameras will get more sophisticated and eventually small enough to launch holograms with a mobile device.

The other four predictions include:

  • The emergence of 'citizen scientists' who collect data from sensors in our cars or any physical device that will be added to massive data sets.

  • Batteries that are powered by static energy or even the air we breathe.

  • The heat from data centers may help power cities.

  • Your commute will be personalized. Adaptive traffic systems will intuitively learn behavior.

This is cool stuff. We just hope in six years that we may put our holograms on the dashboards of our flying land cruisers.

Good news for Detroit teachers, parents and students!!! Robert Bobb’s actions found illegal

Good news for Detroit teachers, parents and students!!! Robert Bobb’s actions found illegal: "

BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) and Detroit School Board Score Major Legal Victory

Against Market-Based Corporate Education Models

Ruling comes on the eve of crucial election in Detroit Federation of Teachers

The Wayne County Circuit Court held today that Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb has violated the law for the last 20 months by illegally taking control over the academic affairs of the Detroit Public Schools.

The Court held that Bobb had no legal authority to seize that power. It also declared that he had no educational expertise or experience — that “all [Bobb’s] study in education has emanated from unvetted sources, who may stand to benefit financially should his academic plans come to fruition and who have supplemented his pay.”

Finally, it held that his educational plan was a “fix” that was “short on teaching and learning wisdom,” an opportunity where some “stand to profit shielded …from the eye of public oversight of competitive bids” because of Bobb’s one-man rule.

In the words of the ruling, [Bobb] “was empowered to figure out how to pay for education fashioned by the Board. Instead he created education products he proposed to implement. His business paradigm envisions competitive marketplace schools where parents shop like consumers for the best schools with best being dictated by survival of the fittest principles of caveat emptor [buyer beware]. …Schools will compete for the best students, leaving less gifted children or those that come from households that somehow fail to present their children to school in the optimal ready-to-learn state, [to] fall by the wayside. Only schools with the best teachers will thrive and without encouragement to foster cooperation among and between teachers and schools, the weak perish.”

George Washington, an attorney who represented the Detroit school board, said “This decision is the beginning of the end of Bobb’s illegal dictatorship and of the pro-charter and anti-education policies that he has attempted to force down the throats of Detroit’s students and citizens. We will do everything necessary to enforce this decision.”

The decision comes on the eve of a crucial runoff election in the Detroit Federation of Teachers. Steve Conn, a long-time BAMN member who is a candidate for President on the Defend Public Education/Save Our Students slate, supported the lawsuit and hailed the decision. Keith Johnson, the current President of the DFT, has supported Bobb from the day he was appointed.

Shanta Driver, the National Chair of BAMN and one of the attorneys on the case, said “This decision rejects the educational program and the political methods that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and plutocrats like Bill Gates and Eli Broad have used in their attempt to destroy public education. The decision and Steve Conn’s election as President of the DFT will vastly strengthen the national fight against Duncan’s pro-charter, market-based competitive education model and will make it possible for us to repair the enormous damage that Duncan, through enforcers like Michelle Rhee and Robert Bobb, has already done to our children’s futures.”

Copies of the decision, as well as the campaign flyer for Steve Conn for DFT President are attached.

Feds illegally raid New Mexico farm school without warrant and find nothing but fresh produce

Feds illegally raid New Mexico farm school without warrant and find nothing but fresh produce: "The government terror campaign against innocent civilians continues with a recent report in the Santa Fe New Mexican about a September raid on a small farming school that left children and administrators in shock. According to the report, officials paid a surprise and unwarranted visit to the Camino de Paz Montessori School and Farm in Cuarteles, New Mexico, on September 21 to search for marijuana — but they ended up needlessly terrorizing small children and finding only tomato plants in the process."

Aussie Kids Foil Finger Scanner With Gummi Bears

Aussie Kids Foil Finger Scanner With Gummi Bears: "mask.of.sanity writes 'An Australian high school has installed 'secure' fingerprint scanners for roll call for senior students, which savvy kids may be able to circumvent with sweets from their lunch box. The system replaces the school's traditional sign-in system with biometric readers that require senior students to have their fingerprints read to verify attendance. The school principal says the system is better than swipe cards because it stops truant kids getting their mates to sign-in for them. But using the Gummi Bear attack, students can make replicas of their own fingerprints from gelatin, the ingredient in Gummi Bears, to forge a replica finger. The attack worked against a bunch of scanners that detect electrical charges within the human body, since gelatin has virtually the same capacitance as a finger's skin.'

Guardsmen Train for Earthquake Response - OzarksFirst.com

Guardsmen Train for Earthquake Response - OzarksFirst.com

(North Little Rock, AR) -- Nearly 300 Guardsmen and Airmen from 38 states are in Little Rock this week, learning about the potential for a major quake along the New Madrid seismic zone.

They're working to put together a unified response effort in the event an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude or greater strikes.

The quake of 1812 registered a 7.8 on the Richter scale, devastating an area from Arkansas to Kentucky.

"At the time the area was sparsely populated, but today you have St. Louis and you have Memphis within the potential area of destruction," points out National Guard Cpt. Chris Heathscott. "You also have 160-200 smaller communities who are going to be in just as much need."

Lessons learned from earthquakes in other countries and the emergency response to Hurricane Katrina are helping Guardsmen better plan for a large disaster.

Middle East Loses Trillions As U.S. Strikes Record Arms Deals - BlackListed News

"One conclusion is that individuals in most countries are half as rich as they would have been if peace had taken off in 1991.

"Incomes per head in Israel next year would be $44,241 with peace against a likely $23,304. In the West Bank and Gaza Strip they would be $2,427 instead of $1,220.

"For Iraq, income per head next year is projected at $2,375, one quarter of the $9,681 that would have been possible without the conflicts of the past two decades." [3]

Laser Made Rain Clouds

Laser Made Rain Clouds

Laser cloud and rain maker.

Laser cloud and rain maker.

The ability to create clouds and possibly rain is now in the hands of humankind. Recently, in a collaborative geo-engineering project between Swiss, German, and French researchers, small clouds were created by firing a laser into the sky above Berlin, Germany.

The laser strips electrons from atoms in the atmosphere, forming hydroxyl radicals that create sulfur and nitrogen dioxides. These dioxides act as seed’ particles for moisture droplets to form. Current cloud-making techniques involve spreading silver iodide crystals in the atmosphere as the "seeds".

The researchers tried out the system in the lab, creating mini-cloud streams in water-saturated air at -24°C (-11.2F), with visible linear clouds along the path of the laser. Later, during outside testing, the laser was focused at a 60m (197ft.) altitude and produced increased water vapor but no clearly visible clouds.

The laser generates a 220-millijoule pulse for 60 femtoseconds (60 millionth of one billionth of a second). It all sounds pretty tiny but the power is equivalent to 3.5 teraWatts peak power) at a central wavelength of 800 nanometres, a repetition rate of 10Hz and a 4cm (1.6”) beam diameter. Although not ideal, laser cloud makingcould still be better for the planet than flying aircraft or firing rockets into the atmosphere and spraying silver iodideover large areas.

It's your Action McNews Network

It's your Action McNews Network: "

This Modern World by Tom Tomorrow

Kablam!: "

This image is stunning. And not just because, well, it’s all explodey and stuff:

[Click to explodenate.]

The three panels show a 1986 test of a Tomahawk cruise missile. The missile traveled 640 km (400 mile) low over the terrain to detonate above the target, a decommissioned fighter plane. It’s pretty clear the test was a success.

But what caught my eye immediately was the middle panel. Let me zoom it for you:

[Click to hugely embiggen!]

[Note: added noon PDT Friday: There's a lot of discussion in the comments below on both the veracity of this test and my interpretation. I've been on travel the past couple of days, finishing up some Bad Universe stuff, so I haven't been able to look into this. So I admit I might be wrong, but won't know one way or another until I can sit and look into this. Stay Tuned.]

Now look carefully there. When the missile exploded, the expanding debris cloud from the vaporized weapon was probably moving faster than the speed of sound. Even so, in this second picture you can see none of it had touched the plane yet when the shot was snapped.

tomahawk_test_obliqueYet look at the plane: it’s on fire. How can that be?

It’s because of something that moves much faster even than supersonic debris: light. When the warhead exploded, it sent out a huge pulse of heat in the form of infrared photons, light that travels about a million times faster than sound. As far as that flash of heat was concerned, the expanding debris was standing perfectly still! There was plenty of time for that heat to get to the plane and set it aflame before the explosion itself could reach that far.

Note that third picture, taken from an oblique angle. You can match the features in the fireball to the ones in the second picture. The ground around the plane is lit up by the blast, and again no debris had yet reached the plane itself.

It’s a little counterintuitive that the explosion works this way. We think of explosions as being made of expanding stuff, but it turns out that light has its role to fill as well. In fact, this is important in other ways: one idea to push Earth-crossing asteroids out of the way is to light off a nuke nearby. The force of the explosion itself isn’t all that great in space, because there’s no air to create a shock wave. The only momentum you give the rock directly is the expanding debris from the bomb itself, which isn’t all that much. But the blast of heat/light is immense, and can heat the asteroid past its vaporization point. The flash-vaporized rock expands, pushing on the asteroid like a rocket motor.

Unfortunately, modeling of this shows it doesn’t work terribly well compared to other methods (like simply slamming the asteroid with a space probe like a linebacker hitting a quarterback). Still, you need to consider all the details when thinking about things like this. The devil hides in them, y’know!

Oh, and one more thing. This Tomahawk test was done 24 years ago. How much has the technology improved since then?
